your phone is a game console, tablet and a laptop #MWC12 | live ...

By Stewart Baines, live from Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona

When I blog, I have an array of devices ? each with a different function. The laptop has the all-round functionality, the tablet the portability and the handset has the pocketability.

The array of devices needed for blogging at #MWC

Some simple, innovative thinking by KT Telecom brings (some of) these devices closer together.

This rather nifty docking station looks like a laptop but without your Android plugged in, it?s a dumb device. Benefits? It charges your phone, and all your data and content is on a single device (without needing a cloud-based sync). Currently a prototype, when it ships in South Korea, the target prices will be under $200. It?s hardly going to replace your laptop, but it is a nice alternative.

From the front this looks like any other Android tablet, but flip it over and you find an Android handset snuggled up. Unlike the dumb dock, this is a fully functioning tablet when the handset is decoupled.

And finally, plug your Android into the Bluetooth gaming console dock, and push the gaming experience onto a big screen. So with one device, you can play on the move or with your feet up, in front of the TV.

(AP) ? Chinese architect Wang Shu, whose buildings have been praised for their commanding presence and careful attention to the environment, has won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the prize's jury announced Monday.

The 49-year-old architect joins Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano and Eduardo Souto de Moura in receiving the honor that's been called architecture's Nobel Prize. Wang, the first Chinese architect to receive the honor, is recognized for the museums, libraries, apartment complexes and other structures that he has designed in China.

"The fact that an architect from China has been selected by the jury, represents a significant step in acknowledging the role that China will play in the development of architectural ideals," Thomas J. Pritzker said in a statement. "In addition, over the coming decades, China's success at urbanization will be important to China and to the world."

Some of Wang's notable design accomplishments include salvaging more than two million tiles from demolished traditional houses to cover the roofs of Xingshan Campus buildings. He designed half the Library of Wenzheng College underground because Suzhou gardening traditions suggest that buildings located between water and mountains should not be prominent.

"China's unprecedented opportunities for urban planning and design will want to be in harmony with both its long and unique traditions of the past and with its future needs for sustainable development," said Pritzker. "The selection of Wang Shu reflects the jury's view that his work represents that standard of excellence which will be so critical to China's future."

Wang, who founded his Amateur Architecture Studio firm with his wife, Lu Wenyu, in 1997, has served as the head of the architecture department of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou since 2000. He is also a frequent visiting lecturer at universities around the world, including Harvard University, University of Texas and University of Pennsylvania.

The formal Pritzker ceremony will be held May 25 in Beijing. Wang will receive a $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion.

Syria's vote: Chance for democracy or Assad trick?

As dozens more Syrians die in a government crackdown, a few make it over the border to neighboring Turkey. NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

DAMASCUS, Syria -- Syrians began voting Sunday on a new constitution that's meant by President Bashar Assad's regime to placate critics but seen by the opposition as a ploy to divert attention from a brutal government crackdown in which thousands have been killed.

Polls opened at?7 a.m. local time (9 p.m. ET), Al Jazeera reported.

Syria has defied international calls to halt attacks on rebel enclaves and at least 89 people were killed nationwide on the eve of the referendum.

Assad presented the revised charter ? which allows for at least a theoretical opening of the country's political system ? as an effort to placate critics and quell the 11-month uprising against his rule.

The new charter would create a multiparty system in Syria, which has been ruled by the same family dynasty since Assad's father Hafez seized power in a coup in 1963. Such change was unthinkable a year ago.

After 11 months of bloodshed, however, Assad's opponents say the referendum and other promises of reform are not enough and have called for a boycott of the vote.

Assad was roundly criticized Friday at a major international conference on the Syrian crisis in Tunisia, where U.S., European and Arab officials began planning a civilian peacekeeping mission to deploy after the regime falls.

President Barack Obama said Friday of Assad's rule: "It is time for that regime to move on."

Syrian rebels have tried to fight back, but they are losing the battle after being outnumbered and outgunned. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

On Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Assad's crackdown belied promised reforms.

"That kind of logic unfortunately renders any kind of reform meaningless," he said. "To fight on the one hand with your people and then to claim that there is reform is contradictory."

Still, Assad enjoys substantial support in many parts of the country. Some have benefited from his policies, others fear chaos or sectarian civil war if he falls.

The insular nature of the regime makes the extent and character of that support hard to measure, and the regime has prevented most media from operating freely in the country during the uprising.

Syrian activists: The world has abandoned us

In the capital Damascus, where Assad retains support among religious minorities and the business class, many said they were eager to vote.

"This constitution is not for one faction against the other," said Suhban Elewi, a 55-year-old businessman who trades in antiquities. "It is for the nation and for all the Syrian people."

Elewi said he planned to vote yes, and dismissed opposition calls to boycott the vote.

"The country is going forward with them or without them," he said.

Posters around town urged people to vote. "Don't turn your back on voting," one said.

Another ? showing the red, black and white Syrian flag ? touted new constitution. "Syria's constitution: Freedom of belief," it said, referring to clauses protecting religious minorities.

Syrian Interior Minster Lt. Gen. Mohammed al-Shaar said more than 14,000 voting centers have been set up for more than 14 million eligible voters across the country.

But the suggestion of political reform led by Assad's regime rang hollow in many parts of the country, where government security forces continued their deadly crackdown on rebels seeking to end Assad's rule.

The violence could also prevent the vote taking place nationwide.

An activist in a neighborhood in the central city of Homs that government forces have besieged and shelled daily for one month laughed when asked about the vote.

"How can they ask us to talk about a new constitution when they are shelling our neighborhood?" said Abu Mohammed Ibrahim from the embattled neighborhood of Baba Amr via Skype. "They are hitting us with all types of weapons. What constitution? What referendum?"

Bay Area Property Management Company, Stokley Properties Inc ...

By Property Tycoon ? on February 24, 2012

Stokley Properties Inc. discusses the state of the rental market, which is still red hot in the Bay Area, the greater Walnut Creek and the Contra Costa area.

Walnut Creek, CA (PRWEB) February 24, 2012

Stokley Properties Inc., a Bay Area property management company that handles properties in Concord, San Ramon, Brentwood, Martinez and Oakland, offers advice for landlords and property owners. The rental market is still hot; however, some landlords are still making the mistake of pricing their properties too high and at a price that is not warranted.

Many owners are not experienced property managers. They believe that because the market is hot, they can get the price they want for their property, regardless of its condition. This is absolutely not true. Clients who are well off will pay top dollar but only when the property deserves the price. Many property owners may only own one rental property and have not had the opportunity to truly understand the dynamics of the property management industry.

Prospective renters must be aware that rental is a highly competitive market. They need to be prepared.

Stokley Properties has been offering expertise and valuable advice to tenants and property managers throughout the East Bay since 1989. It is more than just a property management firm. It also specializes in investment properties throughout the East Bay and Northern California. Stokley will offer sound investment advice to assist investors in achieving real estate goals. Whether the client is looking to buy or sell an investment, Stokley Properties will lend its expertise to maximize a client?s investment value.

?It?s not easy to find the right property management company. Most companies lack the true dedication and attention to detail it takes to achieve success with the properties, the tenants and the landlords. But, Stokley Properties is different. From the first phone call to the follow-up, property prep and ultimate securing of an appropriate tenant, Joe Stokley and team take care of business from A to Z,? Debbie Rossetto of Legacy Real Estate Associates said.

For more information about Stokley Properties Inc., call 925-658-1415, or visit the company on the web at www.stokleypropertieseastbay.net and www.stokleyproperties.net. Stokley Properties Inc. is located at 1630 North Main St., Suite 54, in Walnut Creek.

White House threatens veto of GOP's highway bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? After years of procrastination, the White House and Congress have suddenly boosted a long-term plan to improve the nation's roads, bridges and transit systems to the top of the political agenda.

This week, the House and Senate are set to take up vastly different bills providing a blueprint for shoring up the nation's aging transportation system. Lawmakers are driven in part by a desire to show voters a major accomplishment in an election year when regard for Congress is at rock bottom. They are pitching the bills as jobs generators, although it may be more accurate to say they preserve jobs that might otherwise be lost if Congress doesn't find a way to keep highway and transit programs solvent.

President Barack Obama chimed in Monday with his own plan to spend nearly half a trillion dollars over six years on transportation infrastructure. And on Tuesday the White House threatened to veto the House bill, saying the Republican measure doesn't spend enough to strengthen the nation's transportation system and weakens environmental and labor standards.

But the president's plan is much grander than anything Congress is likely to go along with that the administration has swung its weight behind the Senate bill, a bipartisan plan that more modestly proposes to spend $109 billion over less than two years.

House Republicans have proposed spending about $260 billion over nearly five years, but the bill is drawing fire from so many quarters that the ability of Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to muscle the measure through to passage is in doubt. To build support with tight-fisted tea partiers for such a large spending bill, GOP leaders added sweeteners designed to appeal to conservatives, such as expanded offshore oil and gas drilling, approval of the controversial Keystone pipeline and a requirement that federal employees pay more toward their pensions.

The bill's treatment of mass transit programs has riled urban lawmakers, including New York and Chicago metro-area Republicans who may wind up voting against the bill. It eliminates the guarantee of a portion of federal gasoline and diesel tax revenues for transit, leaving programs vulnerable to future budget cuts.

"If you are a Republican from a city that has mass transit, how can you vote for this and go home?" said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., who is sponsoring an amendment to restore a portion of fuel tax revenues for transit. Seven Republicans have co-sponsored the amendment.

And six GOP lawmakers have sent a letter to Boehner and other GOP leaders saying the transportation bill will stand a better chance of passage if provisions opening leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling are dropped. The provisions, which include opening the East and West coasts and portions of the Florida Gulf Coast, as well as ANWR, to drilling, are supposed to help pay for transportation programs. But the Congressional Budget Office estimates they would raise less than $5 billion over 10 years for the federal government.

"Opening ANWR to drilling as a means to pay for the transportation bill is neither reasonable nor realistic," said Rep. Charles Bass, R-N.H., author of the letter.

The bill also eliminates locally popular federal programs that help underwrite bike paths, bike lanes and pedestrian safety projects, including the Safe Routes to School program, in order to concentrate funding on highways.

"The House bill takes us back to the dark ages," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Republican congressman, told reporters Monday. He said he doesn't expect any Democrats to vote for the bill.

"I hope there will be lots of opportunities to amend it," LaHood said, to increase funding for transit and other needs. "Without amendments, this bill isn't going to pass."

But Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and co-author of a major portion of the bill, said he is "fairly confident" based on his discussions with GOP lawmakers that the bill can pass.

"This is going to be the No. 1 job creator and economic generator bill of this entire session (of Congress)," he said. "I think members will rally behind what may be their last chance of getting jobs and a responsible blueprint for dealing with our crumbling infrastructure."

There will be changes made to the bill through a leadership-backed amendment that will address GOP members' concerns, Mica said.

"The bill isn't done," he said. "The final bill will be something conservatives can be very proud of because it has dramatic reforms and measures that people have called for for years."

But House leaders are being squeezed from both sides. If they give too much ground they risk losing support on the right. The Club for Growth, a free-market, anti-tax group influential with fiscal conservatives, and the political arm of the conservative Heritage Foundation have objected to both the House and the Senate bills. Conservatives say the bills spend too much money and transportation programs should be paid for using only fuel tax revenue. Democrats and moderate Republicans, meanwhile, oppose sharp cuts to popular programs.

In the White House veto threat, Obama's Office of Management and Budget also objected to a mandate in the House bill that a permit be granted for an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. The Obama administration denied the permit last month but left the door open for an application for a new pipeline route. The White House says the bill also eliminates transit programs that help metropolitan areas reduce congestion.

GOP leaders said Tuesday they intend to divide the transportation bill into three bills. Their strategy is to allow lawmakers who oppose the transit changes or oil drilling provisions to vote again those portions, while still supporting the heart of the bill. Afterward, the House clerk will stitch the three bills together.

Floor debate could begin on the House bill as soon as Wednesday, with a final vote expected Friday. Lawmakers had filed 293 amendment requests with the House Rules Committee by Monday's 11 a.m. deadline. The committee decides which amendments can be offered during debate.

Debate began on the Senate bill late last week with a strongly bipartisan procedural vote of 85-11, and is continuing this week. The bill is co-authored by Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., ideological opposites who have managed to overcome substantial disagreement in an effort to pass a bill.

But Democrats, who control the Senate, have struggled to come up with the money to pay for the plan. Several GOP senators have signaled that their support for the bill could turn to opposition if changes aren't made to satisfy their fiscal concerns.

Like the House, the Senate has been hampered by a shortfall between current spending levels and fuel tax revenues, which are the main source of funding for transportation programs. Reductions in driving due to the economy as well as more fuel-efficient vehicles have lowered tax revenues. The budget office projects the trust fund that pays for highway and transit programs will go broke sometime in the 2013 federal budget year.

Without an infusion of cash from somewhere, the Transportation Department could be forced to slow down reimbursements to states for highway construction and other transportation projects. That, in turn, could lead to thousands of lost jobs.

Lawmakers could resolve much of their money woes by increasing the 18.4 cent-a-gallon gas tax and the 24.4 cent-a-gallon diesel tax, but that's politically unpalatable in an economy where unemployment remains high and many Americans feel financially insecure.

Indecision about how to shore up the Highway Trust Fund has long stymied efforts to pass a transportation plan. The last long-term plan expired in 2009. Congress has kept programs going through a series of eight short-term extensions. The current extension expires March 31.

Does Green Tea Have Caffeine?

This article has been viewed 23 times.

Are you looking for an answer for the question :does green tea have caffeine?

If so, I can give you my short answer:

Yes, it does.

Green tea does contain caffeine.

Proceed if you?d like the longer, more detailed answer

Green tea contains less caffeine than coffee
However, it does contain a much smaller amount than coffee.

A cup of coffee may contain up to 100-150mg of caffeine, while a cup full of green tea contains about 25mg. This is a much smaller
amount, the ones often use green tea as a substitute while quitting coffee, as a way to reduce withdrawal symptoms.

White tea contains less caffeine, while black tea contains more.

If you?d like to know the significance of this, however recommend you look at my green tea vs coffee post, where I compare the
health results of coffee and tea.

Tea contains other stimulants relevant to caffeine
Green tea also contains other substances that stimulate one?s heart and central nervous system.

They can be called Theobromine and Theophylline. They are related to caffeine and they?re also found in the Cocao plant (what
chocolate is made of).

Tea also contains an amino acid called L-Theanine, which is considered to have a calming effect. This could slightly offset a few of
the stimulant effects

Why so much interest?
Well, although coffee isn?t actually bad for you in any way, a lot of people don?t like the side connection between it and that is in the large
part due to caffeine content.

Some side effects of caffeine can include anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. These are generally mostly due to the stimulant outcomes of
caffeine, and since green tea contains a lesser amount of it then it should cause less side effects.

For these reasons, green tea may be a healthy alternative to coffee. It has even demonstrated an ability to have some decent health benefits,
that is a subject for a later article.

P.S. I would not really like to promote other artists products on my website, except for this one I will make very. It is called
Highlights, and they are offering a fairly sweet package for everyone who wants a complete treatment for their eating
plan.

It is just a book, along with tons of bonuses, such as a complete day-to-day diet plan, recipes and many more. I suggest you at
least consider their free video, they are giving away a lot of free information that fits with a lot of what I must say
here with this blog. Make sure to watch ?till the end.

The Signs and Symptoms of Panic Attacks | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

It?s like having a heart attack. The panic attacks symptoms make your hands feel numbed, your heart is pounding that you have breathing difficulties, and a feeling of dread strikes all of a sudden and repeatedly with little or no warning. A panic attack is a bit like a violent experience. You may feel disconnected from the real world. In between attacks, there's dread and anxiety that it should happen again.

Panic attacks are symptoms of panic disorder, a type of anxiety disorder affecting millions of adults in the U.S. Today. It often develops during the late teens and early adulthood, and may trouble twice as many women as men. Nonetheless not everybody who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder. While the exact reason for panic disorder still has to be known, analysts suspect a combination of biological and environmental factors may make a contribution to the development of the condition. It includes family history, nerve-wrangling life events, drug and alcohol abuse, and thinking patterns that exaggerate standard physical reactions.

Though panic fits sometimes produce a feeling of unreality, it is a real sickness that may be dealt with successfully. It could be a really terrifying experience and may occur at any point, even while asleep. An attack often peaks inside 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last for much longer. During a panic fit, your heart will pound and you can feel sweaty, puny, faint, or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numbed, and you might feel flushed or chilled. You'll have queasiness, chest pain or smothering sensations, a sense of unreality, or fear of upcoming doom or loss of control.

When faced with an issue or a situation, folk experience stress. It?s quite normal to be concerned about stressed situations. Nonetheless someone who is afflicted by panic disorder may respond to the same pressures with an exaggerated physical reaction. This makes panic attacks far more scary because despite of the absence of actual danger, episodes can still happen anytime, anywhere. It can happen while strolling in the park, chilling out with chums, shopping at the mall, and even in the middle of the night while you are sleeping soundly.

Fear of having another attack generally haunts someone suffering from panic disorder. Such fear can massively affect daily activities. There are folks who would refuse to leave their houses for fear of becoming exposed to such attacks, or they try to avoid being reminded of previous attacks. Over time, they may develop other psychological aberrations or phobia, eg agoraphobia or the phobia of being outside of known and safe surroundings.

Panic disorder is commonly accompanied by other serious issues, eg depression, substance abuse, or alcoholism. The good news is that there's a wide variety of effective treatments for panic disorder available. Some of the more well known treatments are called psychotherapy or talk therapy, cognitive, or biofeedback therapy. These strategies were created to help alter somebody's reply to triggers. Other treatment possibilities include the utilisation of anti-depressant medications and beta-blockers. A lifestyle change, eg limiting caffeine and having a daily fitness regimen, can also help to cut symptoms of panic disorder.

If you experience symptoms like these then you will be interested in agoraphobia treatment and would be helped by reading this Linden Method review.

Benefits of Multi channel audio Device

People around the world are used to listen to 2 speaker stereo music or 2 channel music for the last decade or so. Though the music is good, these music systems produces room ambiance as the surrounding walls reflect the sound back. Therefore, most people are willing to install Surround Sound for their room and the discussion on Advantages of Surround Sound System has gained lot of popularity among the modern crowd.

Comparison of Surround Sound System and Stereo System

This System is way better than a two speaker stereo system in many aspects. The music in the Stereo System comes from the front speakers directly and this causes the distortion in the output quality. Therefore, if you go with Surround System, the output of the music is equally divided among the speakers with the latest technology in place.

Due to arrangement of more than 2 speakers at the rear end of the listener, the music is recreated from the originally recorded sound. The music is reproduced from the original music at the rear end due to many speakers arranged.

With this, the quality improves drastically as the music is unmasked and it becomes free from any distortion. Thus, the quality varies from one type of recording to the other and is always on 3-dimensional quality. This makes the listener involve deeper into the music and gives a lively feeling to the listener. In this way switching to this music set up from ordinary 2 speaker stereo system can really make you feel the depth in the music.

Pros

One of the greatest advantages of its installation is that it can be implemented for all music types. Moreover, any live recording would result in a high quality output that you had heard ever before.

This output music is at its peak during the recordings in the concert hall. This is no way less to produce high quality classical music either. This is at its peak during the production of classical music. You can compare other ordinary music set ups with this system with Pop music and can surely find the difference. The special effects that are included by few famous artists in their music can clearly felt with use of this quality assembling.

In addition it also provides many improvements to the music quality. The use of surround Speakers ensure that the dynamic range of the whole music system is increased. This special effect can be understood while the music is increased from low volume to moderate volume. Whereas in case of stereo speakers, if the background music is set to low level then the music is almost null but if you are using surround speakers then you can enjoy some live music.

This can also produce matrix music which is exceptional music in this modern generation. This makes the music more realistic compared to any two speaker non-surround stereo set up. The quality of this music is high because the ambiance is natural with and no artificial mixing of music takes place. The speaker volume adjustment is flexible to select any amount of reflex music for your desired music.

Implementation

In addition these set ups do need any extra program. High efficiency of costly surround setup can be achieved through manual installation of matrix music as well. This makes the arrangement at low price with easy construction. Any extra materials like new amplifiers or new receivers are not required for its implementation.

Hence, by installing matrix music from existing music system you can feel the experience of high quality surround music at very low price. Therefore, Upgrading existing music set up from an ordinary set up has many advantages compared to stereo set and is very easy to install as well.

State Releases TZ Bridge Study Construction Could Start in August

ALBANY ? New York State and federal transportation agencies are committed to an aggressive approval timeline that could end in the start of construction of a new multi-billion dollar Tappan Zee Bridge by the late summer or early fall of this year.

On January 24, the New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Thruway Authority jointly released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Tappan Zee Bridge project. The DEIS concluded that there would be no adverse impacts with the construction of a new span that would not preclude a mass transit component in the future.

While a host of business and political leaders commented favorably on the expedited plan by the Obama and Cuomo administrations to build a new span, a number of local politicians, including Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino and Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef have repeatedly called for mass transit to be included in the initial construction of the new bridge. Proponents of the expedited plan argue that including mass transit now would add years of delay and billions of dollars to the cost of the project.

Major highlights of the DEIS report included: the construction duration is anticipated to range from 3 to 5? years, and the construction cost is anticipated to run from $3.5 to $5 billion. Using the Design Build project delivery method, a construction duration of 4?- to 5? years was assumed, and the construction cost was estimated at $4.64 billion (in 2012 dollars). The total number of construction job generated by the project is estimated at 14,094. Over the estimated five-year construction build-out, the project would directly generate an average of 2,819 fulltime workers per year.

?New York has spent a decade talking, studying, and meeting about how to replace this vital bridge,? said NYSDOT Commissioner Joan McDonald. ?But under Governor Cuomo?s leadership we have been able to make significant progress in building a new Tappan Zee Bridge. The governor?s expedited timeline has accelerated this project, which will create jobs and generate much needed economic development opportunities in the Hudson Valley. At the same time, the study does not rule out mass transit options. Now that we understand the environmental effects of reconstructing the bridge, it is time to start laying out real construction plans.?

Thomas Madison, executive director of the Thruway Authority, added, ?The completed DEIS represents the remarkable team effort that is quickly becoming a hallmark of the new Tappan Zee Bridge Project. Leadership from Governor Cuomo and support from President Obama have enabled the Thruway Authority, NYSDOT, and the Federal Highway Administration to work in a focused, collaborative way to meet this critical deadline and maintain project momentum.?

The agencies announced that comments on the DEIS will be accepted until March 15, and public hearings will be held in Westchester and Rockland counties in late February. New York met the January 19 deadline to submit the DEIS to the federal government, state officials said. The replacement bridge will have eight traffic lanes as opposed to the current seven, and feature two breakdown lanes that could also be used to accommodate transit or other transportation purposes, state officials said. Additionally, unlike the current structure, it will include pedestrian and bicycle lanes.

A host of politicians from the region expressed their support of the DEIS and expedited plan in statements included in the state-issued press release, including: Rep. Nan Hayworth, Rep. Nita Lowey, Rep. Eliot Engel, State Senators Suzi Oppenheimer and Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, Assemblymen Robert J. Castelli, George Latimer and Kenneth Zebrowski, Westchester County Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins, Rockland County Legislature Chairwoman Harriet Cornell, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, and Christopher St. Lawrence, supervisor of the Town of Ramapo.

Marsha Gordon, president and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester, said, ?Today?s Environmental Impact Study takes us one step further towards completing Governor Cuomo?s bold plan to aid in the reconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge which needs to provide a cohesive transportation network for the region and north-east mobility. Today?s announcement provides a concrete timetable for when improvements will begin, and how the new bridge will differ from its antiquated predecessor. This project also provides thousands of job opportunities for the region and state.?

Al Samuels, president and CEO of the Rockland Business Association, said, ?For too long the Tappan Zee Bridge has been rapidly decaying and government has done nothing. The Governor?s Environmental Impact Study demonstrates significant progress in rebuilding one of New York?s most essential bridges. The governor?s expedited plan to replace the obsolete Tappan Zee Bridge, generates much needed job creation and economic development in Rockland and Westchester. It is clear that anyone who opposes the Governor?s plan is directly opposing jobs in the Hudson Valley. I commend Governor Cuomo for his bold plan which will facilitate safer and faster transit to help rebuild our economy.?

NYSDOT and NYSTA are currently reviewing statements of qualifications that were submitted by prospective contractors as of a January 10 deadline. A short list of qualified bidders will be identified by the agencies on January 31. The project team is scheduled to publish the final Environmental Impact Statement, which would include the selection of the bridge design, in June 2012. It will announce the selection of the Design/Build contractor by July 2012 and reach a Record of Decision, execute the Design/Build contract and issue a Notice to Proceed to the winning contractor by August 2012.

In October 2011, President Obama announced that the Tappan Zee Bridge project, which had been mired in more than 10 years of study with no end in sight, was one of 14 mega-projects across the nation to be fast-tracked in an expedited approval process. At that time, the Federal Highway Administration, which is now spearheading the project, rescinded the prior environmental studies that were underway, which included a number of designs for a new span as well as bus rapid transit and commuter rail to be possibly incorporated into the project. Cost estimates ranged from $8 billion to $16 billion for a full build-out that included commuter rail in a 35-mile study area that began in Suffern and ended in Port Chester. Instead, the new fast-tracked study now involves a little more than three miles from Nyack to Tarrytown and is focused solely on building a new bridge that ?does not preclude transit in the future.?

SAN FRANCISCO There is growing evidence that supports an association between atypical fractures of the femur a rare break of the thigh bone, typically without trauma and the use of bisphosphonates, drugs proven to enhance bone density and reduce fracture incidence caused by osteoporosis. While the risk for suffering an atypical femur fracture while taking bisphosphonates is still very small just 1 in 1,000 patients after six years of treatment research presented today at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) found that discontinuing bisphosphonate use following an atypical femur fracture can significantly lower the risk for a subsequent atypical fracture.

Scientists believe that bisphosphonates may suppress the body's natural process of remodeling -- where old bone tissue is replaced with new, healthy tissue in some patients, resulting in brittle bones susceptible to atypical fractures, especially in the femur.

Investigators reviewed femur fracture data from Jan. 1, 2007 until Dec. 31, 2009 in patients older than 45 enrolled in a large California HMO. There were 126 patients with an atypical femur fracture who reportedly took bisphosphonates prior to their bone break.

The incidence of a subsequent atypical femur fracture occurring in the other thigh was 53.9 percent in patients who continued bisphosphonates for three or more years after their first fracture, compared to 19.3 percent in patients who discontinued bisphosphonate use. Overall, subsequent atypical femur fractures were decreased by 65.6 percent when bisphosphonates were stopped within one year following the first fracture.

"The risk of a contralateral atypical femur fracture (on the opposite side) increases over time if the bisphosphonates are continued," said lead investigator Richard Dell, MD, a researcher in the Department of Orthopaedics at Kaiser Permanente. "Based on these observations, we recommend discontinuing bisphosphonate use as soon as possible after the initial atypical femur fracture has occurred."

Dr. Dell then recommends the ongoing evaluation of these patients, through X-ray or MRI, as they still are at risk for a subsequent, atypical femur fracture on the other femur.

If the patient is at high risk for other fractures, the study recommends use of an alternative osteoporosis medication.

20 Questions About Allergy-Triggered Asthma
News from MSN Health & Fitness:

Robert A. Nathan, MD, is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and director of the Asthma and Allergy Associates and Research Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Q:? What?s the difference between asthma that is due to allergies and asthma that is not?

A: Allergic asthma is an overreactive immunologic response that occurs because a person?s body makes too much of an immune system component called immunoglobulin E (IgE). People with allergic asthma are bothered by common allergens like animal dander, dust mites, pollen, mold, or cockroaches, and they are often allergic to more than one of these things.

When a person has asthma that isn?t related to allergies, but is instead triggered by factors that act directly on the lungs, such as infections, exercise, cold air, pollution, and stress, they have non-allergic asthma. Many people with asthma have a combination of non-allergic and allergic asthma. Of the nearly 19 million adults in the United States with asthma, about half have asthma that?s related to allergies. Sea Wolf (for iPhone)

The original Sea Wolf was a 1976 World War II-themed coin-op game that came with a periscope that entertainment-seekers would use to blast Axis ships out of the water. Fast forward 36 years and the game now lives in the iPhone or iPod touch courtesy of a $1.99 remake that manages to capture the simple, addictive nature of the original while adding modern bells and whistles.

Simple, Fun Premise
Sea Wolf's gameplay is simple: you sink enemy ships and planes with a variety of firepower, while shooting crates for power ups. iDevices, of course, lack built-in periscopes, but you can target foes using the on-screen crosshair by tilting your phone or media player to the left or right. Tapping a fire button icon launches a torpedo, while dragging the cross hair across the screen lets you send off a stream of anti-aircraft projectile from the deck gun. The controls are responsive and work well.

Each level consists of completing a challenge (such as destroying a bridge, or downing aircraft) while meeting a point total. Should your ship take heavy damage, or you run out of torpedoes, the game ends. If, however, you run out of torpedoes after completing the mission objectives, Sea Wolf kindly advances you to the next stage. A nice touch.

Graphics and Sound
Sea Wolf's graphics are simple?not bad, just simple. Graphics whores will gripe about the low-key graphics, but what's there is serviceable. Still, the game could use some visual pop?the color scheme is a bit drab. Military-style drumming sets the combat tone, and the in-game sounds are crisp and satisfying.

Should You Engage Sea Wolf?
If you're in need a quick distraction while making the commute, standing in line at the post office, or waiting in the doctor's office, Sea Wolf's simple, jump-in-and-jump-out gameplay is a welcome diversion. It could use a more vibrant color scheme, but it's a $1.99 game you should check out.

Senate OKs insider trading curbs on lawmakers

The Senate Thursday approved new curbs aimed at preventing lawmakers from trading shares based on inside information, but also extended the bill's disclosure requirements to more than 300,000 other federal employees.

The Senate voted 96-3 to pass the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, which would require members of Congress to file electronic disclosures of their stock trades within 30 days of the transactions.

As a rare piece of legislation with strong bipartisan support in a deeply divided Congress - and the promise of a quick signature by President Barack Obama - the measure was quickly laden with more than 20 amendments this week.

Senators who saw the "clean government bill" as a vehicle bound for quick passage sought to attach proposals ranging from a ban on executive bonuses at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to a limit on terms for members of Congress.

Similar legislation is pending in the Republican-led House of Representatives, and a spokeswoman for Majority Leader Eric Cantor has said he plans to bring it to a vote this month.

After years of languishing, the disclosure bill has gained momentum at a time when voters are fed up with Congress. Opinion polls in recent months have pointed to public approval ratings for Congress hovering around 10 percent.

A November broadcast on CBS' "60 Minutes" about members of Congress trading stock based on inside information they received because of their positions drew national attention to the issue.

"We need to reassure a skeptical public that we understand elective office is a place for public service, not for private gain," said Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Obama, in his state of the Union address last week, asked Congress for swift passage of a bill banning insider trading by lawmakers. "So I am pleased the Senate took bipartisan action to pass the STOCK Act," Obama said in a statement after Thursday's vote, calling it an important step to rebuild trust.

"I urge the House of Representatives to pass this bill, and I will sign it right away," Obama said.

The Senate went one step further, passing the bill with an amendment that imposes the same stock trading disclosure requirements on employees of Executive Branch and independent government regulatory agencies.

EQUAL DISCLOSURE

Many Executive Branch employees are already subject to stringent financial disclosure rules and are sometimes required to divest holdings or put them into blind trusts they cannot control. But Republican Senator Richard Shelby was keen to put administration officials under the same scrutiny as Congress.

"What is good for the goose, it seems to me, should be good for the gander," said Shelby. "It only seems fair that executive branch officials who are already required to file annual financial reports, also be directed to meet the same additional reporting requirements being imposed on the legislative branch."

Independent Senator Joe Lieberman argued against this, saying it would put a costly and undue burden on more than 300,000 government workers, including secretaries and drivers. He offered an alternative to limit the disclosures to about 2,000 top-level officials.

"We're asking agencies to stretch personnel and resources to fulfill a totally new requirement when in fact we want them save money - not figure out ways to spend more money," Lieberman said.

Senators rejected a Democratic proposal that would have required lawmakers to sell shares in companies which could benefit from votes they might make - a requirement that many Executive Branch officials must abide by to avoid the risk of a conflict of interest.

The bonus ban for government-controlled Fannie and Freddie was also approved on a voice vote. The housing finance giants stirred controversy by announcing large bonuses for executives despite needing tens of billions of dollars in taxpayer bailout funds.

Also surviving the vote was a proposal by Republican Senator Charles Grassley to require professionals who gather "political intelligence" and sell this information to hedge funds and other investors for profit be registered like lobbyists.

The White House-backed bill would also explicitly give the Securities and Exchange Commission more clout in going after members of Congress who use non-public information to buy or sell shares in companies.
