Radiation management: med training in S. Africa

The National Nuclear Security Administration reportedly had reps in South Africa this week to conduct training exercises at multiple sites on the medical management of radiation injuries in nuke emergencies.

According to the U.S. agency, the NNSA and its contractors taught medical responders how to treat injured and contaminated patients.

Govt won't bring charges over CIA interrogations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Justice Department announced Thursday it has ended its investigation into CIA interrogations of terrorist detainees without bringing criminal charges.

The decision in the probes of the deaths of two terrorist suspects marks the end of a wide-ranging criminal investigation by federal prosecutor John Durham into interrogation practices during the presidency of George W. Bush.

Durham has looked into the treatment of 101 detainees in U.S. custody since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Durham's probe into another episode involving the CIA began in January 2008 when the Justice Department chose him to conduct a criminal investigation into the agency's destruction of videotapes it had made of its interrogations of terrorist suspects.

In August 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder expanded Durham's mandate to include a preliminary review of the CIA's interrogation of specific detainees overseas. In June 2011, Holder approved Durham's request to move into a full criminal investigation of the two deaths.

The 2009 expansion followed the public release of an internal CIA inspector general's report that revealed agency interrogators once threatened to kill a Sept. 11 suspect's children and suggested another would be forced to watch his mother be sexually assaulted. The report said some CIA interrogators went beyond Bush administration restrictions that gave them wide latitude to use severe tactics such as waterboarding, a simulated drowning technique.

In regard to the just-completed probe of the two detainees' deaths, Holder said that "based on the fully developed factual record concerning the two deaths, the department has declined prosecution because the admissible evidence would not be sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt."

In a message to employees Thursday, CIA Director David Petraeus said that "as intelligence officers, our inclination, of course, is to look ahead to the challenges of the future rather than backwards at those of the past. Nonetheless, it was very important that we supported fully the Justice Department in its efforts" and "I would like to thank everyone who played a role" in doing so.

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said he was "heartened that the investigation is complete, and I'm heartened by the results. I had great confidence in Mr. Durham. I just regret that many CIA officers had to go through yet another review of these activities."

Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, called the outcome of the investigation "nothing short of a scandal."

"Continuing impunity threatens to undermine the universally recognized prohibition on torture and other abusive treatment," Jaffer said.

Durham's review examined whether CIA interrogators used any unauthorized interrogation techniques, and if so, whether the techniques could constitute violations of the torture statute or any other laws. The approach taken in the probe was not to prosecute anyone who acted in good faith and within the scope of the legal guidance given by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel regarding the interrogation of detainees.

Thursday's announcement came in the deaths of Gul Rahman and Manadel al-Jamadi.

Rahman died in the early hours of Nov. 20, 2002, after being shackled to a cold concrete wall in a secret CIA prison in northern Kabul, Afghanistan, known as the Salt Pit. He was suspected of links to the terrorist group al-Qaida. Rahman is the only detainee known to have died in a CIA-run prison.

Before Durham looked into Rahman's death, two other federal prosecutors conducted separate reviews and could not prove the CIA officer running the Salt Pit had intended to harm the detainee ? a point made in a government document that has been released publicly.

Al-Jamadi died in 2003 at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. A military autopsy declared al-Jamadi's death a homicide.

At Abu Ghraib prison, instead of turning al-Jamadi over to the Army, CIA officers took him to a shower stall. They put a sandbag over his head, cuffed his hands behind his back and chained his arms to a barred window. When he leaned forward, his arms stretched painfully behind and above his back.

Within an hour, he was dead.

At least three CIA employees came under scrutiny, including a paramilitary officer who ran what was known as the detainee exploitation cell at Abu Ghraib.

The officer was on the raid when a group of Navy SEALs captured al-Jamadi. He processed al-Jamadi into the prison but he was not in the shower room when al-Jamadi died.

The officer failed to have a doctor supervise al-Jamadi before he was processed into the prison, violating agency procedures. The officer, who was reprimanded over the incident, now works for a defense contractor.

Tropical Storm Kirk looks more like a comet on NASA infrared imagery

Tropical Storm Kirk looks more like a comet on NASA infrared imagery [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Aug-2012

Tropical Storm Kirk looks more like a comet than a tropical storm in infrared imagery from NASA's Aqua satellite because of wind shear. NASA infrared imagery also revealed powerful thunderstorms around the center of circulation which are indicators that Kirk will continue strengthening. Meanwhile, another low pressure area appears to be organizing in the eastern Atlantic, far to the southeast of Kirk.

Tropical Depression Kirk formed from the eleventh tropical depression of the Atlantic Ocean season. Tropical Depression 11 formed on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. EDT about 1,270 miles (2,045 km) east-northeast of the Lesser Antilles.

On Aug. 29 at 12:29 a.m. EDT the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite captured infrared data on Tropical Storm Kirk's clouds. Cloud top temperatures were colder than ?F (-52C) around the center of circulation and west of the center. That's where the strongest storms and heaviest rainfall were occurring. Early on Aug. 29, wind shear was affecting Kirk from the southwest. Those winds were pushing clouds and showers associated with Kirk to the northeast giving Kirk the appearance of a "comet tail" in infrared imagery.

At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) on Aug. 29, Kirk's maximum sustained winds were near 45 mph (75 kmh) and gradual strengthening is expected. The center of Tropical Storm Kirk was about 1,135 miles (1,825) km east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, near latitude 24.7 north and longitude 46.9 west. Kirk is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 kmh), and is expected to turn northwest on Aug. 30.

Kirk is dealing with a combination of wind shear and dry air, which will make intensification a slow process. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects Kirk to curve to the northeast into an area of weaker wind shear, where it is expected to intensify into a hurricane over the weekend of Sept. 1-2, remaining over open ocean. Kirk is also expected to become extra-tropical on its northeastern journey.

While Kirk continues getting organized, another low pressure area is following suit in the eastern Atlantic. There's a low pressure area riding along a tropical wave, located about 700 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, that is showing an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity. The system has a 50% chance of becoming tropical depression 12 as it moves to the westward to west-northwestward at about 15 mph (24.4 kmh) over the next couple of days.

3 Steps to Stop 'Shoulding' All Over Yourself

Any of those statements sound familiar? I know I've been guilty of thinking them over the years. We want to feel good, look great, fit in and be successful. But instead of success, sometimes we just end up 'shoulding' all over ourselves. Our minds are racing but our feet are planted firmly on the floor... which makes one think to oneself, 'I really should get moving.?

Here are 3 steps to take you from shoulding to doing:

1. Find out where your 'shoulds' are coming from?

Ask yourself some questions: Why should I? Who says I should? Is it my inner voice that guides me to make the right decisions, or is it society's norm that is telling me what to do? For example, as a young healthy woman in my thirties, I should want kids. That is the norm of the culture in which I was raised. You go to college, get a job, fall in love, and make babies. Listening to my inner voice, I've never had the slightest inclination to fit this norm. When expressing this to others, there are a whole number of responses from those of shock - "Never? You never want children?!" to pity - "Oh honey, don't worry, you will soon change your mind,? to understanding - ?"You don't either? Oh thank God I'm not alone!" Once you discover the origin of the shoulds in your life, you can then decide which ones are yours to keep.

2. Be honest with yourself.

I once asked a friend what made her decide to adopt a vegan lifestyle. I had believed her answer would be about health, animal rights and environmental issues. To my surprise, her answer was this: "I was told by someone vegans are sexier. I wanted to be sexier so I went vegan." Wow, I love the honesty! No apologies about it.

You are here to live your life, not the one someone else thinks you should. You only have the power to please one person all the time: that person is you.

3. Turning 'I should' into 'I am'

Now that we're being honest, let's take care of the semantics. I should does not imply change or action. It perpetuates the cycle of inertia. Break the cycle by changing those I should's that you sincerely want to do into I am's. Telling yourself, 'I am a runner' will result in you getting your butt out there and running. After all, you're being honest with yourself now. Keep telling yourself, 'I am eating healthy foods' and you will think twice about heading to Dunkin' Donuts and get on the fast track to better health

Getting into action: Shoulds in a jar

Need some help getting into action? Grab a post-it pad, a pen and an empty jar. Write down each should you are telling yourself - ALL OF THEM (you might need a few post-it pads). Then go through the first two steps above sorting your should notes into 2 piles. One pile will be the ones that you truly want for yourself, the others are those someone else wants for you. Destroy the second pile. Now you have your pile of shoulds you do want for yourself. Change each of these statements from 'I should' to 'I am', each clearly written on a new post-it note. After writing each 'I am' note, fold the piece of paper and put it in the jar. When you have gone through all your 'I should' notes and turned them into 'I am' notes, destroy the pile of shoulds, leaving you only the 'I am' notes in the jar.

Each week, pick out an 'I am' note from your jar and focus on that statement. Keep repeating this with all the notes in your jar and life will get easier and more enjoyable. And, after all, isn?t' that how life should be?

GamingLawyer - Your Lawyer for Everything Gaming & Gambling ...

An unusual arrangement is coming soon to Atlantic City in which the Mohegan Indians will buy a piece of Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City and run its day-to-day affairs.

The deal centers on a $35 million expansion that will bring a Margaritaville restaurant to the casino, splashing palm trees and parrots across its facade. But the casino?s existing Roaring ?20s theme, adopted to take advantage of interest in the hit HBO series ?Boardwalk Empire? about Prohibition-era Atlantic City, is staying, too.

The idea is to bring new excitement (and new customers with their new money) to a casino that has struggled since nearly having to close two years ago. The alliance with the Mohegans and their well-established casinos in Connecticut and Pennsylvania should give a big boost to Resorts, which was the first casino in the United States to open outside Nevada.

?We are really excited about this,? said Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. ?It?s a win-win for everyone involved.?

The arrangement must be approved by New Jersey casino regulators. A vote has yet to be scheduled, but one could come next month.

It became necessary following the sudden death of Resorts co-owner Dennis Gomes in February. A veteran of the casino industry, and the inspiration for the hit movie ?Casino,? Gomes had been working to turn Resorts around from years of losses under previous ownership to bigger, newer competitors in Atlantic City and in surrounding states.

Following Gomes? death, Resorts owner Morris Bailey began discussing a marketing alliance with the Mohegans, but talks progressed quickly into a deal to have the tribe?s management arm, Mohegan Gaming Advisors, provide the experience and know-how that was missing without Gomes at the helm.

Etess is particularly proud that the Mohegans are being called on to run an established commercial casino.

?What it shows is how the gaming industry has changed, and how tribal gaming has grown,? he said. ?It used to be that commercial casino companies would help tribes build and run casinos. Now it?s the other way around; things have progressed to the point where commercial casinos want us to come in and help them.?

Etess said he hopes to have the Margaritaville restaurant running by Memorial Day weekend. It will occupy the Boardwalk frontage of the casino where two smaller restaurants now sit. Across the Boardwalk, a Landshark Bar & Grill will be built on the sand, along with bocce ball and volleyball courts.

?Margaritaville is a big draw; it?s the highest grossing restaurant in Las Vegas, and the one we have (in Connecticut) does very well ? and neither one of them is anywhere near a beach,? Etess said. ?The potential for this kind of attraction literally right on the beach is just fantastic.?

Margaritaville, named after Jimmy Buffett?s most famous song, nearly came to Atlantic City four years ago when a New York developer inked a deal to buy what was then the Trump Marina Hotel Casino and re-brand it. But that deal fell apart, and the casino was bought by the owners of the Golden Nugget.

Aside from Margaritaville, the biggest part of the deal is the affiliation of Resorts with Mohegan Sun properties in Connecticut and Pennsylvania; players will be able to use comps and credits at any of the three casinos interchangeably. That?s exactly what Carol Gleason of Saddle Brook, N.J., plans to do.

?We go to Foxwoods now, but I?ll have to try Mohegan Sun,? she said during a morning of craps and slot machine gambling at Resorts. ?That sounds nice.?

Steve Norton, an Indiana casino consultant who was vice president of Resorts when it opened in 1978, says there?s a lot to like about the deal, citing the group?s casino experience.

?Mohegan, which was recently refinanced, brings a stronger balance sheet to the partnership, which is paramount in today?s Atlantic City,? he said. ?The tribe and its excellent player base in New York and north Jersey can be shared by Resorts.?

Nonetheless, Resorts still has problems, Norton added.

?The picture is bleaker over the next six to nine months, starting after Labor Day,? he said. ?Resorts has positive impacts coming from the addition of Jimmy Buffett?s Margaritaville; but it remains to be seen if this type expansion will put customers in beds those 200 mid-week nights from September thru next June.?

Gomes? son Aaron, Resorts vice president, has been helping to run the business since his father?s death, and Resorts has inched back toward profitability. It posted a gross operating profit of $199,000 in the second quarter of this year compared with a $5.9 million quarterly loss a year ago. Etess has asked the younger Gomes to stay on under the new regime, but he has yet to decide whether to do so.

Etess said Resorts will keep its Roaring ?20s theme in the non-Margaritaville portions of the property. The hotel, which was built in the 1920s, has marble and wood that would be costly to replace, but that still looks elegant, he said. Staying, too, are the flapper-style costumes that female beverage servers wear (and that have generated two lawsuits from older workers who claim they were fired after being judged insufficiently sexy in them).

Etess said the Mohegans have wanted to enter the Atlantic City market for years, but did not want to spend $1 billion or more to build a casino from scratch. This deal provides an affordable entry to the market, currently ranked third in the U.S. after Nevada and Pennsylvania.

He also said the tribe has no plans to eventually buy Resorts outright. But if it does a good job running it and restoring it to profitability, that could open the doors to other management jobs at non-Indian casinos.

?It?s a great opportunity to show what we can do,? Etess said. ?We know we can do a great job.?

Different Types of Window Trim

Trim that is used as a decoration for your windows comes in many types. You have the option to choose the type of trim for your windows based on preference and the price of the product. Natural materials to composite materials and metal are available to use as trim for your windows. Trim around windows is a good way to cover gaps and to add a decorative element.

Wood Trim

This is a type of trim option that you can find at any home improvement store. Pieces are available in a variety of lengths that can typically be cut to any required size. The trim needs to be painted before you install it around the window. Classic wood trim can be used on the interior of your home or installed on a window on the outside of your home.

Vinyl Trim

The use of vinyl trim is an option to match the existing vinyl siding on your home. Vinyl is also known as a PVC product that is used as an alternative to wood trim. This product is weather resistant, durable, and easy to maintain. Vinyl window trim does not need to be painted. Periodic washing of the trim is all that is required.

Aluminum Trim

Aluminum is a type of trim that is used on the inside or outside of your home. Metal is a product that is weather resistant and also easy for you to maintain. The material is more difficult to install that vinyl or wood trim. A miter saw with a metal cutting blade will be needed to cut the material. Special tools will need to be used to bend the aluminum into the required shape. Nails are used to secure the metal and caulk is used to fill any gaps.

Finger-Jointed Wood

This trim option is an alternative to the use of solid wood. This wood can also be used on the interior of your home or on the exterior. The trim is made from poor pieces of high-quality lumber. Pieces are cut into trim sections that are ready to install around a window. The best quality of finger-jointed wood thin that you can find is a all heartwood with a vertical grain.

Medium-Density Fiberboard

MDF is a composite material that is similar to wood. You can easily cut pieces for window trim to paint any color. The material will first need to be primed before paint can be applied. This is a great option as it is cheaper to purchase than typical wood trim. Nails or glue can be used to secure the trim around the windows on the interior walls of your home.

BP recalls gas in Indiana. You can recall gas?

BP alerts northwest Indiana drivers that their gas may cause hard starts or stalls. Drivers who have experienced such symptoms can call BP for a refund.

By Laurent Belsie,?Business editor / August 21, 2012

In this 2011 photo, the price for unleaded regular gasoline is seen on the sign outside a BP gas station in Beachwood, Ohio. The oil company is alerting drivers in northwest Indiana that they may have gotten defective fuel, causing cars to stall.

BP is recalling a 50,000-barrel batch of gasoline ? more than 2 million gallons ? in northwestern Indiana because the fuel can cause cars to stall, have a hard time starting, or other problems.

If you filled up with regular unleaded gasoline at at BP station or another station served by BP's Whiting, Ind., storage terminal during the past week and experienced difficulties, you may be able to claim a refund.

The oil company is accepting claims not only for the gasoline but also for repairs associated with the contaminated gasoline. As of late Monday afternoon, the company?had received 4,500 calls and 800?e-mails from motorists who said they were having fuel issues.

The problem is a higher than normal level of polymeric residue?in the gasoline, according to BP. The company is going through shipping records to alert gas stations and other customers that may have purchased the contaminated or "off-specification" fuel and replacing it with fresh gasoline.

Gasoline recalls are a rare occurrence, BP spokesman Scott Dean writes in an e-mail. "The latest time I remember recalling?off-spec gas blended at a terminal was January 2002."

To file a claim, motorists can call the BP hot line at 800-333-3991?or e-mail?bpconsum@bp.com.

"The claims process is pretty straightforward," Mr. Dean writes. "Submit your gasoline?sales receipt and repair bill and we will start the process. If you
didn?t keep your receipt, usually bank statements will show where and?when you purchased the fuel, so we can research it that way, too."

Protect Your Wealth with Comprehensive Estate Planning

Simply writing a will is just the beginning of estate planning; you also need to devise a plan for how to lower the capital gains tax (CGT) payable on your estate and ensure your beneficiaries get the full value of their inherited assets. An effective estate plan will ensure that your hard-earned assets do not fall into the wrong hands or onto the wrong side of the family.

Documenting your wishes for your wealth begins in your will. Here you can differentiate between your children and your in-laws and state, and state who gets what share of your fortune. You can nominate beneficiaries for each of your insurance policies. If you have children you will also need to appoint a guardian for them and make arrangements for their inheritance to go into a trust and appoint a power of attorney. Your will can also make special mention of circumstances as transferring wealth to another beneficiary in the event that your spouse remarries.

Some important factors to take into account for your estate planning include making your wishes simple and easy to carry out, developing a strategy to lower the taxes payable and configuring a plan to ensure your estate is put to its best possible use.

An effective estate planning strategy significantly reduces or eliminates the amount of tax payable by your beneficiaries. It also makes provision for the possibility of divorce or bankruptcy and should minimise death benefits tax. Death benefits tax can reduce your superannuation death benefits by up to 31.5% and should be made provision for in your estate planning. A good strategy can also protect your wealth against beneficiary vulnerabilities like substance abuse and addictions or gambling and financial difficulties.

You should review your estate plan every few years or when your financial circumstances, or family changes. Your estate plan will depend on a number of factors like how old you are, your financial wealth and the number of assets you have, the number of beneficiaries you have and the instructions or requests that you put in place. You will also need to ensure you have a competent executor to carry your wishes and demands out, and to handle your business and financial affairs.

Everyone should have an estate plan in place and should review it on a regular basis to ensure that nothing has fallen through the cracks. It is very difficult for a grieving family to assume management of the estate when things have been left open-ended and it can also lead to a lot of turmoil and disagreement within the family if it is not resolved.

Volcano expert likes to blow things up

Maars are not your typical volcanoes.

These explosive geological oddities don't form neat, cone-shaped mountains. Rather, they can crop up just about anywhere within certain volcanically active areas. Maars are created when a rising plume of magma interacts with underground water, creating a mixture that bursts out of the ground without much warning.

To get a better idea of where and when these eruptions might strike, Greg Valentine, a researcher at SUNY Buffalo, is trying to re-create his own miniature maars.

A better understanding of this phenomenon could lead to better warnings before explosions, and could also help geologists locate hidden sources of diamonds, which can form in maars, Valentine said.

The problem is, there are very little data on maar eruptions, which happen worldwide about once every 20 years, he said. They are also short-lived; after forming, they are active for a few weeks to a few years before disappearing.

Mimicking maars
Valentine recently performed a series of experiments in which he did his best to mimic a maar: he buried explosives, filmed their detonation and carefully sifted through the resulting craters, he told OurAmazingPlanet.

He found that the width of the explosion crater was not directly linked to the size of the explosion. For example, a crater with a small width did not necessarily mean the explosion was small.

"From a hazards perspective, we want to know about the energy of the individual explosions," Valentine said. That's because it's the energy measure most relevant to how much damage to a blast is likely to inflict on nearby buildings or people.

For example, one high-energy explosion is more dangerous than, say, three separate explosions collectively as powerful, he said. Larger explosions are more likely to launch large rocks and create bigger shock waves.

However, the shape of a crater does give some information about the nature of a maar's blast.

In one experiment, Valentine buried one pound of explosives, mostly TNT. After it blew, it left behind a coned-shaped crater. In another experiment he detonated three explosives in the same spot, one after another, each one-third of a pound. The result was a bowl-shaped hole, he said. But both had roughly the same width.

"You can't use the diameter of a crater produced by multiple explosions to estimate energy of individual explosions," he said. "But you can use the shape of the crater. We went back to these pads and carefully excavated them, similar to what an archaeologist would do." His results have yet to be published in a journal, he said.

Diamonds in the maar
Maar eruptions create structures beneath the Earth's surface called diatremes, which are an important source of diamonds around the world. That's because maars are occasionally formed by a specific type of molten rock known as kimberlite, in which diamonds form. Learning more about how diatremes form could help locate diamonds, Valentine said.

Valentine is planning more complex experiments, including using a mixture of magma and water, rather than explosives, to better simulate a maar.

Although maars aren't extremely common, their unpredictable nature could make them quite destructive. Just like stratovolcanoes such as Mount St. Helen's, maars can form pyroclastic flows of superheated gas and rock, or throw up clouds of fine-grained ash that could affect air traffic, such as Iceland's Eyjafjallaj?kull volcano.

Recent maars have occurred in relatively unpopulated areas, such as Alaska. But they have the potential to form and wreak havoc in several well-populated regions, including Japan, Mexico City and Flagstaff, Ariz.

New attack on pain

The research relates to a family of molecules firstly discovered in Melbourne that applied to blood cell development. One of these, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor or GM-CSF, acts as a messenger between cells acting at a site of inflammation.

Professor John Hamilton has posed the question: could blocking GM-CSF action lead to a new treatment for inflammatory diseases? In experimental models of rheumatoid arthritis, Professor Hamilton and Dr Andrew Cook had previously shown that blocking GM-CSF function with an antibody suppressed the disease leading to clinical trials which are already showing patient benefit.

They have now shown, in a paper that has just appeared in the world's top ranking arthritis journal, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, that GM-CSF depletion also suppresses pain in such models; they have also noted similar efficacy in an osteoarthritis experimental model.

"Without a doubt, quality of life and to be free from pain are important issues for people suffering with arthritis-related conditions" said Professor Hamilton.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating condition with the peak incidence being in people in their 30s and 40s. It is more common in women than in men.

"With our ageing population, the more common condition of osteoarthritis impacts more on our community and medical resources. A new therapy that can block such painful conditions would have massive benefits for health providers and governments in the future" said Dr Cook.

Addiction to heroin can be blocked: research

Addiction to morphine and heroin can be blocked, according to research released on Wednesday which could prove a major breakthrough in treating addicts and in pain relief treatments.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia worked with colleagues at the University of Colorado in the United States to pinpoint a key mechanism in the body's immune system that amplifies addiction to opioid drugs.

"Our studies have shown conclusively that we can block addiction via the immune system of the brain, without targeting the brain's wiring," said Mark Hutchinson from Adelaide's School of Medical Sciences.

"Both the central nervous system and the immune system play important roles in creating addiction, but our studies have shown we only need to block the immune response in the brain to prevent cravings for opioid drugs."

The results, to be published Thursday in the Journal of Neuroscience, reveal that laboratory studies showed that the drug known as plus-naloxone, which is not yet in clinical use, will selectively block the immune-addiction response.

The researchers said that opioid drugs such as morphine and heroin bind to immune receptors in the brain known as TLR4 which then act as amplifiers for addiction, ramping up the "reward" effect of drugs of abuse to a high degree.

The new drug automatically shuts this effect down, Hutchinson said.

"It really reduces the reward level down to the equivalent of food, sex, and hugs," he told AFP.

Professor Linda Watkins, from the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Colorado, said the work fundamentally changed understanding about opioids, reward and addiction.

"We've suspected for some years that TLR4 may be the key to blocking opioid addiction, but now we have the proof," she said in a statement.

The researchers believe the discovery could prove useful if plus-naloxone could become a co-formulated drug with morphine, to allow patients who need pain relief to take the drug without fear of addiction.

But it could have a second application.

"It can be used by itself potentially in addicted people to help their addiction," Hutchinson said.

The research team says clinical trials could be underway within 18 months.
